OHSAS 08001

What is BS OHSAS 18001 / ISO 45001 Health and Safety Management?

BS OHSAS 18001 is an international standard which sets out the requirements for occupational health and safety management good practice for any size of organisation. It provides guidance to help you design your own health and safety framework, allowing you to bring all relevant controls and processes into one management system.

BS OHSAS 18001 can also be adapted to all types of organisations to help eliminate or minimise operational risks and hazards. The standard is designed to help you create the best possible working conditions in your organisation - helping you to meet legal, industry and customer requirements.

In late 2017, OHSAS 18001 will be replaced with ISO 45001. For information about the impending changes please see information below and BSI Video .

What are the differences between ISO 45001 and OHSAS 18001?

The overall aim of ISO 45001 remains basically the same as OHSAS 18001, which is to ensure the safety, health and wellbeing of everyone involved or affected by an organization's activities and to ensure that risks are reduced to an acceptable level.

  • ISO 45001 has a different structure compared to OHSAS 18001 - the new standard aligns the structure with the other ISO management systems structures (e.g. ISO 9001, ISO    14001, etc.). This aims to simplify the implementation and the integration of several management systems in a structured, harmonized, and efficient way.
  • The new standard has a stronger focus on the "organization's context". For instance, with ISO 45001, organizations will have to consider societal expectations, with regard to health and safety, as well as internal considerations.
  • In OHSAS 18001 organizations can delegate health and safety responsibilities to an individual such as a H&S manager. ISO 45001 requires the incorporation of health and safety aspects into the overall organization management system, with top management taking a strong clear leadership role.
  • OHSAS 18001 focuses on controlling hazards while ISO 45001 focuses on identifying and controlling risks.
  • As with the other ISO management systems, in ISO 45001 the terms "document" and "record" have both been replaced with the term "documented information". Documented information will need to be maintained to a level adequate for demonstrating compliance.

What are the benefits of OHSAS 18001 / ISO 45001?

  • Creates the best possible working conditions across your organization
  • Identifies hazards and appropriate controls to manage them
  • Reduces workplace accidents and illness to cut related costs and downtime
  • Engages and motivates staff with better, safer working conditions
  • Demonstrates compliance to customers and suppliers
